About / why the room exists

A cinema should have a point of view.

Midnight Assembly is a fictional single-screen cinematheque built around curation. We programme seasons, restorations, regional work and filmmaker conversations instead of treating every week as a reset.

The room is intentionally small enough for context to matter. Introductions are brief, programme notes are specific, and the same curators who choose the films host the post-screening conversations.

Offerings / programme lines

Four ways into the screen.

01

Repertory seasons

Director retrospectives, national cinemas and thematic runs designed to reward seeing more than one title.

02

New work

First and second features, regional premieres and independent releases that need a room before they need scale.

03

Archive nights

Restorations, rare prints and contextual introductions built from film history rather than nostalgia.

04

Live conversations

Filmmaker Q&As, critic talks and audience discussions scheduled only when they can deepen the film.

Process / curation

A programme is edited like a film.

  1. 01

    Question

Begin with a curatorial question worth spending six weeks with.

  2. 02

    Research

Screen widely, check rights, restoration status, formats and contextual material.

  3. 03

    Sequence

Build a running order where each film changes how the next one is seen.

  4. 04

    Host

Write notes, prepare introductions and decide where conversation genuinely adds value.

  5. 05

    Review

Attendance, audience response and curatorial debrief shape the next season without flattening taste into metrics.

Why no trailers?

FAQ / house rules

Before the projector starts.

Do screenings start exactly on time?

Yes. Doors open 25 minutes before the listed time. There are no commercial adverts, so the programme begins at the published time.

Are films always subtitled?

Non-English-language films screen with English subtitles unless the programme listing states otherwise. Accessibility captioning is marked per screening.

Can I refund a ticket?

Tickets can be moved or refunded up to four hours before a screening. Sold-out events may use a waitlist for released seats.

How does membership work?

Members receive reduced ticket pricing, early booking windows, one monthly archive screening and voting rights in the annual audience-choice programme.
