Formula 088 · independent perfumery · fictional studio

Scent, before it becomes a story.

Sable & Air composes perfume from raw-material behaviour outward: evaporation, texture, diffusion and the way a formula changes against actual skin.

About / the nose

We do not begin with “luxury”. We begin with what the material actually does.

Natural and synthetic materials are both useful. The question is whether each earns its place through effect, stability and safety.

Every formula is evaluated on blotter, fabric and several skin types over time. Opening impact matters less than the full six-hour arc.

Clients receive a readable formula rationale: what changed, why it changed and what can still be adjusted before maceration.

Offerings / current collection

Three formulas. Three temperatures.

01

No. 18 / Rain on stone

orris · petrichor · black tea

A mineral floral made to sit close to skin, not fill a room.

02

No. 24 / Burnt fig

fig leaf · cedar ash · labdanum

Green sap at first contact, then dry smoke and resin after an hour.

03

No. 31 / White current

neroli · salt · ambrette

Transparent citrus and seed musk composed for warm weather.

Private formula

A one-of-one fragrance brief developed through three structured evaluation rounds.

Hospitality scent

Low-diffusion ambient formulas for rooms, linen rituals and arrival moments.

Material direction

Short consulting engagements for candle, soap and body-product scent systems.

Process / formula development

01

Brief

Translate words like quiet, mineral or warm into measurable scent behaviours.

02

Trials

Build small mods around contrast, diffusion and evaporation instead of adding more notes.

03

Wear

Test over hours, fabrics, climates and skin. Record what disappears too early or stays too long.

04

Rest

Final concentrate rests before dilution and a last blind evaluation against the approved brief.

Work / recent commissions

A hotel arrival ritual without a “hotel smell”.

For fictional coastal guesthouse Morrow Bay, we replaced the expected diffuser with a cedar-and-neroli linen mist used only at evening turn-down. The scent became an action, not background noise.

People / studio

Two noses, one archive.

Amara Velez

Perfumer / founder

Formula architecture, evaluation and raw-material sourcing.

Theo Martins

Evaluator / production

Blind trials, stability records, maceration and batch documentation.

The archive

1,420 labelled trials

Every failed mod stays useful because the reason for failure stays attached.

Insights / scent notebook

Why clean can smell loud

Modern musks can read as extremely diffusive even when the formula feels visually minimal. “Clean” is an effect, not a low concentration.

The opening is not the perfume

Citrus can win the first minute and vanish by lunch. Evaluate a brief across the entire wear curve before polishing the top note.

Natural does not mean gentle

Cinnamon, citrus oils and many botanicals have real safety limits. Beauty and compliance are not opposing goals.

When to stop adding

If a formula lacks shape, a new ingredient often hides the issue. Remove, rebalance, then retest before expanding the palette.

Objections / before we blend

Can you copy a perfume we already like?+

No. References can identify a direction, but the commission must develop its own structure and formula.

Do you work only with natural materials?+

No. We use naturals and aroma molecules according to the effect, safety profile and stability the brief requires.

How many revisions are included?+

Private formula work includes three evaluation rounds. Additional structural changes are re-scoped before more lab time begins.

Can a formula be exclusive?+

Yes. Ownership, exclusivity period, production rights and future reformulation responsibilities are agreed before development starts.
