Identity stationery
Business cards, note cards, letterheads and small-format brand pieces designed around paper tactility and restrained ink systems.
Ink under pressure
North Coast is a small letterpress studio for identity systems, invitations, artist editions and printed objects where impression, paper and restraint matter as much as the artwork.
Today's forme
Copper plate / warm red / 540 gsm cotton
About / why relief print
Letterpress works when touch, limited colour and deliberate pacing are part of the communication. We recommend another process when solid floods, photographic gradients or very low unit cost matter more.
Every job begins with stock, size, quantity and finishing constraints. Artwork is then adapted for the press instead of forcing a digital layout through a process it was never designed for.
Offerings / what fits the bed
Business cards, note cards, letterheads and small-format brand pieces designed around paper tactility and restrained ink systems.
Wedding suites, exhibition openings, private dinners and launches with envelope, edge and finishing decisions planned as one object.
Numbered prints, chapbook covers, broadsides and short-run inserts developed with artists, writers and independent publishers.
Bands, labels, swing tags and inserts where a small letterpress element can carry material character without overengineering the whole pack.
Process / make-ready
Check size, line weight, reversed type, trapping and whether the design actually suits relief print.
Output polymer or prepare existing type/blocks, then lock the forme with the correct bearer and furniture.
Set packing, pressure, registration and ink film on waste sheets until the print is repeatable.
Hand-feed, inspect continuously and stop when drift, ink gain or stock behaviour moves outside the agreed band.
Dry fully, trim, score, number, edge-paint or assemble, then pack by count rather than visual estimate.
Work / press record
A fictional poet's twelve-part broadside set printed from photopolymer plates in carbon black and oxide red. Each sheet carries a deliberately uneven deckled edge; registration is precise, the object is not sterile.

Insights / printer's devil
Some papers reward a visible bite; fine type can lose counters when pushed too hard. Pressure should serve the design, not prove the machine is strong.
A single well-chosen ink on the right stock often has more authority than four colours fighting for attention.
Uncoated cotton, recycled board and hard smooth stock hold ink differently. Approve the material before finalising delicate line work.
FAQ / before plate output
Usually, but it still needs preflight. Fine lines, large solids, reversed text and tight registration may require artwork changes for the press.
We generally begin around 25 pieces for special work, but setup cost means short runs are chosen for intention rather than economy.
We can mix against references, but ink appearance changes with stock, coverage and impression. Critical colours are approved on the actual paper.
Yes for print-led identity pieces and editions. We also collaborate with external designers and provide production guidance before artwork is locked.
