A compact service index

S1 / 135

Mine rescue team drills

Mine rescue team drills is scoped through the drill scenario, with brief, hazards injected, communications log, team decisions, physiological limits and debrief actions. The boundary, exclusions and handover evidence are stated before work begins.

Refuge chamber training

Refuge chamber training is scoped through the drill scenario, with brief, hazards injected, communications log, team decisions, physiological limits and debrief actions. Capacity, constraints and decision ownership stay visible from intake to closeout.

About

The operating idea

Refuge Shaft is a fictional underground emergency training centre for rescue teams, supervisors and control-room personnel. Scenarios combine smoke, communication failure, route loss, gas readings and refuge decisions under timed but safety-controlled drills.

This identity is organised around the drill scenario, because the organisation becomes credible when the public can follow the same unit practitioners use internally.

The record is not decorative: brief, hazards injected, communications log, team decisions, physiological limits and debrief actions. That evidence changes how work is scoped, handed over and remembered.

Projects / work

Recent work, told through constraints

Case 01

Level 9 smoke drill

A team navigated a simulated haulage smoke event with one communication failure injected after the first route decision.

Case 02

Refuge occupancy exercise

Supervisors rehearsed chamber activation, headcount, atmosphere checks and external communication without turning the exercise into a classroom talk.

Case 03

Control room tabletop

Operations leaders managed conflicting gas reports and missing-person information while documenting escalation thresholds.

Sequence

Read left to right, then hand the record forward

  1. 1

    Set the scenario boundary

Set the scenario boundary is the entry control point for a drill scenario. The team records brief, hazards injected, communications log, team decisions, physiological limits and debrief actions so the next decision is made from an explicit state, not memory or assumption.

  2. 2

    Brief safety controls

Brief safety controls is the next control point for a drill scenario. The team records brief, hazards injected, communications log, team decisions, physiological limits and debrief actions so the next decision is made from an explicit state, not memory or assumption.

  3. 3

    Run under observed conditions

Run under observed conditions is the next control point for a drill scenario. The team records brief, hazards injected, communications log, team decisions, physiological limits and debrief actions so the next decision is made from an explicit state, not memory or assumption.

  4. 4

    Debrief decisions, not bravado

Debrief decisions, not bravado is the next control point for a drill scenario. The team records brief, hazards injected, communications log, team decisions, physiological limits and debrief actions so the next decision is made from an explicit state, not memory or assumption.

Detail / field notes

Three arguments worth slowing down for

A hard drill is not automatically a useful drill

01

A hard drill is not automatically a useful drill. A working note from Refuge Shaft on the decisions hidden inside mine rescue training / underground emergency preparedness. It connects the claim back to drill scenario and names where professional judgement or uncertainty remains.

Refuge decisions depend on route and atmosphere information

Debriefs should capture decisions before memory smooths them

FAQ

Before you say yes.

Q01

Do you use real smoke underground?

Only within engineered, authorised training environments. Scenario realism never overrides ventilation, exposure and escape controls.

Q02

Can non-rescue staff attend?

Yes. Supervisors, control-room teams and contractors need role-specific emergency competence even when they are not rescue-team members.

Q03

Are drills graded?

Performance is observed against defined behaviours and technical checks; the objective is actionable competence, not theatrical toughness.
